I came to New Zealand in 2002 to obtain a degree in Outdoor Education and Adventure Recreation, and have since made NZ my 2nd home.
Movnat- A natural physical Education program who has now joined forces with the incredible Author, biomechanist, scientist and full time mover Katy Bowman to create Natural Movement and restorative exercises for anyone. T
heir combined course, Katy Bowman restorative exercise course and why we need Movement versus exercise as well as looking at how we carry ourselves in alignment have been life changing for me. I used to be and still am a competitive athlete mainly mountain running now , and very much used to be a chronic training exerciser. Katy and Movnat totally changed my view of being fit and especially fit for life. I was diagnosed with patellofemoral knee osteoarthritis and my running in particular was hurting and sometimes even getting up and out of bed. It was particular last year so I took 6 months off running and starting studying Movement to figure out the answers myself.
Through my level 1 and level 2 Movnat courses and studying everything what Katy Bowman says as well as reading her books I changed the way I move and train. Sports doctors, physios and Orthopedic surgeons had given up what else to do other than stop running and squatting. Along with a Restorative exercise specialist from Katy Bowman’s certification, Hazel Boot and her Chch business www.mindinmovement.co.nz we solved my issues with corrective exercises. Now 8 months on I can run, squat, monkey hang, climb and jump better than the last 4 years.
My knees no longer swell up, we no longer have chairs, we squat all the time at home and everywhere. I changed my shoes to minimalist and barefoot when possible. I fixed my alignment issues as well as doing a run coaching certification with biomechanic and run coach Jay Dicharry from the US also. I also have a great mentor in David Roche one of the top ultra running coaches from the US and my own coach Camille Herron.
My passion has always been to support others to move better and laugh a bit more. I wish I had remained a child in regards to movement and had not become a sufferer of our sedentary western culture but it is never too late to move and fix the damage you done and run, walk and move better than you ever done. I am sure you will not regret it. Now I can justify being a “child“ again.
